Abstract

This study analyze the forest cover change in the Middle Magdalena Valley between 1987-2001; in a 13.50 Km? area, using a multitemporal change cover analysis to determine patterns, rates and factors in this period. We used Lansat images and basic cartography, and the logistic regression análisis to analyze the relation between the forest presences, deforestation and regeneration process with independents variables. During the three years, the forest decrease and the grassland was the dominant cover. In1987- 2001 the deforestation had a 10.000 ha/year rate. The regeneration in 1987-1991 (34.600 ha/year) was eight times higher than 1991-2001 (4.200 ha/year) In 1987-2001 the forest reduces its area in 101.806 has. The main factors in the decrease of the forest area in this period, are related with the population growth and the enlargement of the agriculture front, in addition with the armed conflict in the region. The fulfillment of the models were low (ROC 0,66-0,75) the mostin regeneration and deforestation. The forest presences, regeneration and deforestation show a negative relation with the soil fertility and elevation, and the slope and distance to rows, settlements and rivers show a positive relation.
